Agatha Christie leefde van 1890 – 1976 en schreef meer dan 80 detectives en zo’n 200 korte verhalen. Ze bedacht één van de meest bekende detectives: Hercule Poirot. Murder on the Orient Express – Agatha Christie’s bekendste werk

De Oriënt-Express was wereldberoemde als luxetrein die van Parijs naar Istanbul (Constantinopel: de oude hoofdstad van het Oost-Romeinse Rijk, door keizer Constantijn de Grote zelf gebouwd). In deze roman komt de trein onverwacht stil te staan door een zware sneeuwstorm en wordt gedwongen de nacht door te brengen in een niemandsland. Tegen de tijd dat het ochtend is, is er één passagier minder in leven. Een Amerikaan ligt dood in zijn coupé. Het is aan detective Hercule Poirot om de moordenaar – die ook op de trein zit – te achterhalen.

The ABC-Murders – Seriemoord à la Se7en

Een seriemoordenaar gaat op een wel heel creatieve, maar gestructureerde manier te werk: hij wil alle zesentwintig letters van het alfabet afwerken (vandaar de titel ABC-moorden). Om zijn opzet duidelijk te maken laat hij bij elk corps de ABC Railway Guide achter, geopend op de pagina waar de naam van de stad of het dorp vermeld staat waar de moord heeft plaatsgevonden. Hij begint bij een stadje met de letter A, gaat door naar de B, de C en zo verder…

Tien vreemden, die ogenschijnlijk niets met elkaar gemeen hebben, worden onder valse voorwendselen naar een strandhuis nabij Devon gelokt, door een mysterieus individu dat zichzelf bekend maakt als U.N. Owen. Tijdens het diner begint een plaat op de platenspeler plotseling te spelen: een ongeziene gastheer beschuldigt elk van de aanwezigen van het hebben van een groot geheim. Eén voor één worden de aanwezigheden vervolgens uitgemoord…

Death on the Nile – totdat het schip strandt…

Eén van de meeste exotische detectives van Agatha Christie. Een ontspannende tochtje over de Nijl wordt bruut verstoord als blijkt dat Linnet Ridgeway door het hoofd geschoten en vermoord is. Ze was jong, mooi en ging stijlvol gekleed – een meisje dat alles had, tot ze haar leven verloor. Niets is wat het lijkt in deze exotische setting, ook schijnbare bekentenis niet.

Een bijzonder verhaal, want: Agatha Christie’s allereerste misdaadroman! Kapitein Arthur Hastings wordt uitgenodigd op het uitgestrekte landgoed Styles om te genezen van zijn verwondingen aan het front van de Eerste Wereldoorlog en tot rust te komen. Drie verschillende meisjes delen samen één appartementje in Londen. De eerste werkt als secretaresse, de tweede is een kunstenaar en de derde kwam naar Hercule Poirot in de veronderstelling dat ze een moordenaar was. Maar is ze dat ook? Er zijn forensische sporen in overvloed: revolvers, messen en bloedspetters, maar er is geen hard bewijs. Het kost Poirot al zijn kracht en vernuft om te bepalen of meisje nummer drie schuldig, onschuldig of gewoon gek is.

Een genadeloos kartel zoekt naar middelen om de hele wereld in de tang te nemen.
